Can I go to work the day of my root canal?
Yes. Most patients feel fine and return to normal activities the next day. Some mild sensitivity is normal for a few days, but this is easily managed.
Does a root canal hurt after treatment?
Some tenderness is normal for a few days after treatment, but most patients take pain medication (ibuprofen or acetaminophen) and anti-inflammatory (steroid) and feel fine. Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until it's restored with a crown.
What are the alternatives to a root canal?

Do root canals cause cancer?
No. This is a common misconception without scientific basis. Extensive research has found no link between root canal treatment and cancer. Root canals eliminate bacterial infections and prevent serious health complications. What about holistic or natural alternatives to root canals?
If a tooth has a deep infection or damaged nerve (pulp), the infection must be removed or the tooth extracted. There are no natural alternatives that eliminate the infection while saving the tooth. Root canal therapy is the gold standard for infection removal. After root canal treatment, you can pursue restorative options aligned with your values, but the infection must be addressed first to protect your health.
What happens if my root canal fails?
Root canal failure is rare (5-10% of cases), but it can happen if bacteria reinfect the tooth or if the infection was more complex than initially diagnosed. If a root canal doesn't heal, we have two treatment options. Endodontic retreatment involves reopening the tooth, removing the previous filling, and thoroughly cleaning the canal system again, with a 70-90% success rate. Alternatively, we may perform an apicoectomy (surgical endodontics), where we remove the tip of the tooth root and seal the canal from the end. In rare cases where neither retreatment nor apicoectomy is successful, tooth extraction may be necessary.
